Healthy Hair & Swimming

Swimming is a great exercise as it is low impact and one is able to work out all body muscle groups. The other great news is that those who regularly swim tend to look years younger than their actual age. This certainly beats any antiaging cream out there. Hmmm this certainly sounds most appealing as which woman does not like to look younger than her age right. ( Note to self must find time to take up this activity )

The only down side about swimming regularly is that most swimming pools in Malaysia are chlorinated pools. Chlorine can dry out both hair and skin and makes it feel tight, dry and itchy as chlorine strips your skin off it’s natural oils.

When the hair becomes wet with chlorinated water, the hair shafts absorb the chlorine, which strips the hair of its natural lubricant, called sebum. If you swim frequently, the repeated drying can cause your hair's protective cuticles to crack, which leads to split ends and frequent breaking of strands. Protect your hair before swimming by getting it wet with clean water first, which impregnates the hair shafts and keeps them from absorbing chlorine. You can also coat your hair and scalp with conditioner or oil. A swimming cap offers some protection from chlorinated water, plus it keeps longer hair out of your way while swimming. Wash your hair immediately after swimming to remove as much chlorine as possible.

Drinking lots of water is a good way to keep yourself hydrated. Ensure that you have a quick shower after swimming. Always apply moisturizing lotion to keep your skin hydrated and prevent dryness.
